Lecture 02 Concept of Force



This video explains the concept of force system. It consists of basic definition and meaning of force.
Force is an external agency which changes the state of rest or motion of the body when it acts on it. The SI unit of force is Newton (N). 1 newton of force can defined as the force required to produce the acceleration of 1m/s2 in a body of 1Kg mass,

Characteristics of the Forces
1)    Magnitude
2)    Point of action
3)    Direction

Special forces like Weight, Resultant of force and equilibrium of force are also explained.

Weight of the body can be defined as the gravitational force of attraction exerted by the earth on a body is known as weight.

Resultant of force can be defined as the single force which can replace the given force system.
Equilibrium of force Is the force equal in magnitude, opposite in the direction and collinear to the resultant of the force.

If number of forces act on the body are said to form a force system, it can be classified as Coplanar and non-coplanar force system.

All the forces in the force system acts in the same plane then it is called coplanar force system otherwise non-coplanar force system.

The line of action of all the forces in the force system passes through the same point then it is called concurrent force system.

The line of action of all the forces in the force system are parallel to each other then it is called parallel force system.

The line of action of all the forces in the force system are neither parallel nor they pass though same point then it is called non concurrent and non-parallel force system.

It consists of basic definitions and meaning of various branches of Engineering Mechanics Engineering Mechanics: it is the branch of physics which deals with the study of effect of force system on a particle or rigid body. Deformable bodies: Explained using example of lever and weights, the body which gets deformed or which changes its shape on the application of force.
